No Matter What Subject You Teach, We Are All Charged to Address the Whole Child

See how you can use art to facilitate discussions in your classroom about social and emotional learning.

Why SEL?

This course includes everything you need to support all K-12 learners in rigorous discussions and relevant art-making.

  • Discover how to use questioning to ANALYZE a work of art in the context of SEL.

  • Develop the skills to CREATE works of art relating to both the art analysis and to social and emotional skills.

  • LEARN the skills needed to hold analytic discussions around any work of art.

You don't have to sacrifice emotional intelligence to cover the standards.

As teachers, we are required to teach standards, but we are also responsible for the WHOLE child. Learn how you can teach standards in a way that addresses the social and emotional learning of your students.

Lesson 1: Course Introduction and Why

In this lesson, we'll look to set the foundation for our SEL training. We will cover the WHY of SEL, the five competencies of CASEL (Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning), and how those competencies intersect with the arts.

Lesson 2: Analyzing Norman Rockwell's Self-Portraits

Let's get into the meat of this training! We're going to look at two of Norman Rockwell's pieces and learn how to analyze with the mindset of the first two competencies of CASEL. This lesson will equip you with strategic questions to ask your students about these works of art that point back to SEL.

Lesson 3: Your Turn!

Using another art piece from Normal Rockwell, we are going to look at the third competency of CASEL. This competency is the heaviest, so we'll discover how to use art to navigate difficult and sensitive topics in your classroom using some required activities to help you put your new knowledge into action.

Lesson 4: Basics of Self-Portraits

You don't have to be an artist or understand the art form to teach this and reach your students! There are different levels of complexity when it comes to self-portraiture, so we are going to touch on examples of each and learn how self-portraiture can help students with self-awareness.

Lessons 5 & 6: The Final Two CASEL Competencies

What are your general observations about your students in regards to relationship skills? What about responsible decision-making? Let's look at a piece from Norman Rockwell that will help you address these final two competencies with your students.
